“So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.”
In his debut book, John Green showcases the ups and downs, the triumphs and tragedies that we always face as young adults. He successfully captures the exact feelings of young Miles Halter.
He is friendless, lonely and tired of his life in Florida. He is highly fascinated by biographies and last words of people. The last words of François Rabelais were “I go to seek a Great perhaps.”
He decides to attend Culver Creek to start anew and in search of his “Great Perhaps.” He becomes friends with his roommate Chip aka The Colonel who immediately names him “Pudge”, a guy named Takumi and the young and beautiful Alaska Young.
He immediately falls for Alaska. She is friendly, flirty and super unattainable (with a boyfriend in college) and all of her charm leads Miles and his friends in a labyrinth of emotions which becomes way too hard for them to escape. They just don’t know how to find their way around it. But all of this young adventures, laughs and experiences are followed by a terrible tragedy which shatters them.
I personally found the book wildly relevant and I think the book is more about Miles Halter than Alaska Young although the name suggests otherwise. I do wish I could know what happened at the end but I guess that’s the beauty of the book.
Also, I actually bought the 10th anniversary edition which includes parts which were the part of the initial version of the book.
The book is funny and beautiful yet heart breaking at the same time. The book is fantastically written and is an absolute favorite of mine.
Lots of love,
